If you're coming early to St Martin, make sure to visit Marigot!

The quaint Gallic town of Marigot is the administrative center of French St. Martin. Both the French/European and Caribbean cultures are represented here and create that unique blend of the French Caribbean, with the castle of Fort Louis overlooking town and creating a permanent sense of history.

French St. Martin has never shown an extreme eagerness to attract the large cruise ships, which has turned so many Caribbean ports into shopping malls, without much civic activity. Marigot has been spared that fate and today, fancy boutiques and charming restaurants line the streets.

The Marina Royale is one of the anchors of downtown, where a wide selection of restaurants is framing the waterfront and moored yachts.

On the opposite end of the town's center is the West Indies Shopping Mall – a beautiful piece of eccentric architecture, inviting you to sample the goods of elegant stores in air-conditioned comfort. The mall is located next to the ferry terminal for the boats shuttling passengers to the neighboring island of Anguilla.

The present economic climate has not been favorable to Marigot; the Euro is the currency of the French side and for years the exchange rate to the US-Dollar has made life difficult for merchants on the French side of the island. This does not mean that there are no bargains to be found – Marigot is definitely worth exploring.             

Nude Beaches in St Martin

St Maarten - St Martin has a fairly relaxed attitude towards beach nudity. The island is the leading Caribbean destination for nudists, with Club Orient on famous Orient Beach the resort of choice. Topless sunbathing is the norm almost everywhere, except at some resorts catering to a mostly conservative American cliental. The famous Sunset Bar & Grill at Maho Beach offers free drinks to topless ladies.

Even though the Dutch side doesn't advertise 'official' nude beaches, Cupecoy Beach has been for decades the Dutch side clothing optional spot. There are several remote beaches, where nobody will complain if you swim in the buff.

On the French side, there are many empty beaches and visitors can dress or undress as they please - again, nobody really cares - no matter what official publications state. Safe 'nude' spots besides Orient Beach are Baie Rouge and Happy Bay next to Friars Bay.

My favorite home made Body Scrub recipes for before tanning or before a party!

I do a body scrub per week and specially before a vacation on the beach or a party.  When in a hurry I simply combine sugar with honey for the body and honey with baking soda for the face, but below are 3 of my favorite recipes. Try them and let me know!

Coffee Body Scrub

Coffee tightens and rejuvenates skin, while raw sugar exfoliates, and olive oil seals in moisturize.

Ingredients

• 2 cups of coarse ground coffee
• 1/2 cup Turbinado raw sugar
• 3 Tbsp olive oil

Instructions

Combine all ingredients in medium bowl. Take a warm bath or hot shower to open your pores and hydrate your skin. Rub the coffee mixture into your skin in large circles with even, firm pressure. Shower to rinse, pat dry, and follow with unscented body lotion or light vegetable oil.

Almond-Oatmeal Scrub

Almond meal and oatmeal slough off dead skin cells, as sage tones. Whole-milk yogurt reinforces with the oil naturally released from the almonds during scrubbing to replenish the skin's natural moisture.

Ingredients

• 2/3 cup coarse ground almonds
• 1/3 cup dry fine oatmeal
• ½ tsp dried sage
• plain full-fat yogurt as needed

Instructions

Add almonds, oatmeal, and sage to food processor or blender and grind on pulse until they reach the consistency of course meal. Keep covered and cool in an airtight container until ready for use. Upon each use, take medium-sized handful (around 1/4 cup) of the mixture and combine with enough yogurt to form a thick paste. Rub gently over skin with a washcloth or loofah sponge and rinse with cool water. Follow with gentle moisturizer.

Lemon Salt Glow

Sea salts bring a healthy glow to dull, dry skin,.which may then benefit as much from the antioxidant properties of lemon as the rich nutrition of almond oil.

Ingredients

• ½ cup sea salt
• ½ cup sweet almond oil
• ½ tsp finely grated lemon zest

Instructions

Combine all ingredients, taking extra care not to let any water touch the ingredients, as it will dissolve the salts. Store in an airtight container in a cool, dry place. Before showering, swirl ingredients together with fingertips to reintegrate, then apply to body in firm scrubbing motion with hand or soft washcloth. Step into the shower and let power of the water stream rinse off the mixture. (Particularly effective as an exfoliant and moisturizer for a smooth, nick-free shave.)
